Our mission is to produce reliable Partners for Children.
Our ponies are bred and trained to perform in Many disciplines including Trail Riding . We have miles of trails in the provincial park close to our farm.
All our ponies are kept at pasture as much as possible even throughout the winter. Our daughters handle them daily starting at birth under my supervision. They also ride and show them at local shows in different disciplines such as English flat classes, Jumping, Dressage, Western classes and games. Competing is always part of the fun and we do take time off the farm to go to some shows. Ponies are also involved in camps at the different stages of their training.
What can you expect from a SGA Pony:
*Temperament:
Our ponies have very laid back trusting attitude and have been trained and handled in such manner they have been treated with respect and respect is expected from them.
There is nothing cute about ponies that think your child is another pony or pasture buddy. This would lead to nibbling, pushing and can get to biting, kicking, pulling etc... That is not respect.
They have been at pasture most of their lives, they have not been confined in a stall and don't have any vices. They have had plenty of time to be ponies with other equine friends while through training. They are emotionally and physically fit.
*Extended ground training:
In the firs 3 years, we spend an extensive amount of time handling them, they go through extensive sacking out as well.
You can expect a SGA Pony to bath, clip, stand tied without pulling, stand
for the farrier, load on command "up", lead, square up, back on the lead,
be needled without fuss, go through water, in/out of building and tight places, lead without hesitation in any situation etc....
*SGA Ponies are not Pets but Partners: Ponies are sometimes considered less valuable than horses because of their size, when in fact they should be chosen very carefuly since they will be partnered with children and tied to our children's safety, well being and happiness.
At SGA stables we take great care in placing our ponies to the right homes. We do not breed and train backyard ponies or pets. We have rescued too many ponies from founder and death because they were forgotten and left to pasture only to get fat.
For that reason, we like to place our ponies to "show" homes whether it is "show circuit" homes or just "fairs" show homes.
We seek homes where horseback riding is a daily activity and where resources and time is spent around equine activities throughout the whole year. My daughters ride all year long, our ponies are never idling.
We breed and train our ponies for your child to start an adventure in Equestrian sports with a partner his/her size.
* What is a Reliable Pony:
When you first start riding, the first thing you learn is: A horse is a horse, is a Horse, is a Horse. It might sounds like a strange saying but horses' behavior is often unpredictable. The younger the horse, the more unpredictable it is. Only repetitive training and lots of experience improves the steadiness of one horse's behavior to any specific situation and even then, there is always some situation that might bring your horse to use the basic flight instinct .
Our ponies are reliable in the sense that they have learnt to be confident and learnt to trust their handlers. They are ready to take on new experiences with courage; our ponies have shown resilience and analyse situations rather than using the "flight" option and then think about it.
We have been very careful not to set them up for bad experiences. Everytime they were doubtful or resistant, they were always positively rewarded for giving in.
Extensive handling and systematic positive re-enforcement has lead to confident and trusting animals.
